What Cookies Are

Cookies are small files a website saves in your browser so it can remember something about your visit. Some sites also use your browser's local storage, which works in a similar way. Here I call them all "cookies".

Some are essential. The rest are optional, and I only use them if you agree. Until you choose, nothing optional runs.

Your Choices

On your first visit a banner asks which cookies you're happy for me to use. You can accept them all, reject everything that isn't essential, or choose category by category.

You can change your mind at any time with the Cookie preferences link at the foot of every page. I keep your choice for up to 12 months and then ask again, and I'll also ask again if I add anything new that needs your permission.

You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you block the strictly necessary one, the site can't remember your choice and you'll see the banner on every visit.

Strictly Necessary

These make the site work, so they're always on.

• Your cookie choices: remembers which categories you've agreed to. Stored in local storage as kindred_cookie_consent for up to 12 months.
• Light or dark: if you pick a theme with the toggle, it's remembered in local storage as theme. Pick the one your device already uses and it's cleared.
• Form drafts: if you fill in one of my forms, such as a questionnaire or the note before we chat, your answers save in local storage as you go, so you can come back and finish later. They stay on your device until you send them or clear your browser.

Analytics

These tell me which pages get read, how people found them and where they leave, so I know what's worth writing more of. I look at the numbers in aggregate, never to identify you.

• Google Analytics 4: sets _ga and _ga_* cookies to tell visits apart and measure page views and traffic sources. Kept for up to two years. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services.

Google Consent Mode

Until you agree to analytics cookies, Google Analytics isn't loaded at all and its storage signal is set to "denied". If you agree and later change your mind, the change takes effect straight away.

Other Services This Site Loads

These supply parts of the site. They don't set cookies for me, but because your browser fetches files from them directly, they can see your IP address and which page asked for them.

• Google Fonts supplies the typeface.
• Font Awesome supplies the icons.
• cdnjs and jsDelivr supply a couple of small code libraries.
• Apple Music supplies the album artwork and 30-second previews on the Listening page. A preview only loads when you press play.
• YouTube plays the occasional embedded video, using its privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com). Once you press play, Google's own privacy policy applies.
• GitHub hosts the site and keeps short-term server logs, including IP addresses, for security.

Changes to This Policy

I update this policy when the cookies change. If I add one that needs your permission, I'll ask you again.
